GRITS On the
Road!
|
|
The
GRITS team has been very busy with travel this summer! Here are some
brief descriptions of where they've been and what they've been doing
...
May
23, 2008: Cacy and Lacey traveled to
Lexington, KY to attend the KY Girls STEM Collaborative to get an idea
of a kick-off event in action! They spent an engaging day listening
and talking to other women about girls in STEM (and were taking
notes for GRITS's Kick-Off this fall!).
June 16-19, 2008:
Cacy and Lacey traveled once again, this time to Washington, DC, to
attend the Joint Annual Meeting of the National Science Foundation.
The purpose of the meeting was to bring together NSF-funded
researchers studying race and/or gender equity in STEM fields. Cacy
and Lacey attended many presentations on the subject of women in STEM
fields. They also did some heavy networking during their poster
presentation on GRITS, which took place the evening of the 17th.
July
22, 2008: Judith, Lacey, and
Cacy traveled to the University of Tennessee at Martin to
talk about GRITS and exhibit Her
Lab In Your Life, now in its permanent
home at the Paul Meek Library. They first toured the exhibit, then
met with UT Martin faculty and staff to discuss ways to advertise the
exhibit, as well as how to get UT Martin in on the GRITS action!
July
26, 2008: Cacy trekked
to Cookeville, Tennessee for the American Association of University
Women State Conference and Summer Leadership Workshop. At the
meeting, she networked with other University women who are
concerned about the status of women in STEM, and
she developed leadership goals for GRITS. AAUW advances
equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.
For more information on the Tennessee chapter of AAUW, please
visit their Web site: http://www.discoveret.org/aauwtn/.
July 26-30, 2008:
Lacey flew to Boston, Massachusetts to attend the
Association for Gender Equity in Leadership in Education (AGELE)
National Conference. While there, she met educators and facilitators
from around the country, all of whom are dedicated to furthering
gender equity, particularly in STEM fields. She received excellent
information and made some great contacts!
July
27-31, 2008: Judith was invited to
Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, to give a presentation in
the symposium Outreach
and Inreach: What Are You Doing To Produce the Next Generation of
Chemists? The symposium was held at the 2008 Biennial
Conference on Chemical Education. The title of her talk was
GRITS: Girls
Raised In Tennessee Science and focused on how MTSU
"got serious about women in STEM." Judith also explained
how MTSU began an Expanding Your Horizons conference in 1997 with
over 300 middle school girls, and closed with a discussion on our new
initiatives, GRITS and the GRITS Collaborative.
August
7, 2008: Lacey traveled
to Nashville to (wo)man an information table at the Tennessee
Science Teachers Association inservice meeting at Hunters Lane High
School. She met many middle and high school science teachers who
were very excited to hear about GRITS and what we're doing for girls
in Tennessee! (Our thanks to Ruth Woodall, director of the
Tennessee Scholars program, who invited us to the meeting and
graciously shared her table!)

Girl
Scouts Provide Positive Experience for Girls
Merrill
Derrick, PR Manager
Girl
Scouts of Middle Tennessee
The Girl Scout experience enables girls to grow into
strong young women by providing opportunities that help shape their
futures. Girl Scouts explore leadership, healthy living, financial
literacy, the arts, and math, science and technology. Girls also learn
about themselves, as well as people from other cultures. They are
taught to become tomorrow's leaders, while participating in
experiences that challenge them today.
Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee is committed to
serving girls by offering programs that provide real-life
experiences. The Girl Scouts help girls explore the world from
different viewpoints, and it promotes responsibility, independence
and teamwork. Activities and programs are designed to be
age-appropriate, and as a girl progresses in Girl Scouting, the
activities that she may participate in become even more immense.
The
Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee serves almost 15,000 girls and 7,500
adult volunteers in 39 counties. It is a part of Girl Scouts of the
USA (GSUSA), the world's preeminent organization for girls, with a
membership of more than 2.6 million girls and adults nationwide.
Today, as when founded in 1912, GSUSA strives to build girls of
courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.
